During an interesting discussion about leadership and employee motivation with a current crew member who happens to sit on multiple competencies (which we like to refer to as biased when only one of those is asked for), he told me how he perceives different managers. Returning home after closing asking myself what motivates me as a manager in my team, I came to thinking there are basically three kinds of people I have worked with over the years.
There are the people who do what you tell them to do. You know they get the job done but you don’t know if it is only because you tell them to do it, what their values are or where their loyalties lie. They are quiet and conscientious. They keep things going in a steady pace but they don’t excel. They make you comfortable and lazy as a leader.
There are the people who don’t do what you tell them to do. They can be either aggressive (they simply refuse or give a fierce look or a smart comment) or passive aggressive (they say they will and then they simply don’t). If not confronted or dealt with they eat a hole through anything you try to build including your own confidence and the work ethics of the entire team.
Then there are the people who challenge you. They listen, think and ask questions. They don’t always agree but they will accept if conveyed by reason. They come with initiatives and suggestions. These are the people you learn to respect, to trust and the people you turn to for advice. These are the people who make you want to do better and who aid your own personal development. These are the people you remember.
